DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS

The Town of Exeter, New Hampshire (population approx. 16,000) is seeking a skilled and visionary leader who will hit the ground running to successfully lead a team of talented and committed public works professionals in a fast-paced environment with high service demand, complexity, and volume.  Exeter is a thriving seacoast community, rich in history, located just 50 miles from Boston, 30 miles from Manchester, and 65 miles from Portland, ME.  Exeter is also host to Exeter Hospital and the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy.  With an operating budget of $17.4 million, the Director of Public Works is responsible for the planning, supervision, and management of the 46 FT/3 PT employees across four divisions: Engineering, Water & Sewer, Highway, and Maintenance, which includes capital projects, roadways, bridges, dams, stormwater, water, sewer, town buildings, fleet, landfill, and solid waste and recycling.  This position reports directly to the Town Manager.  The Director of Public Works will lead and empower the DPW administrative team to provide innovative and effective solutions to the challenges of running a highly successful department.  The administrative team includes the Town Engineer, the Assistant Town Engineer, the Water and Sewer Manager, the Highway Superintendent, the Maintenance Superintendent, and the Business Manager. 

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a Master’s in Business/Public Administration, and/or at least eight years of progressively responsible relevant experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed in the position.  Salary range to $130,000, plus a $5,000 signing bonus after six months. Salary: Per the town’s compensation plan, the salary range is up to $130,000, commensurate with experienceHealth Insurance: Choice from 3 plans through HealthTrust in which the town pays either 90%, 86%, or 79%, depending on the plan.

Health Care Buyout: If an employee does not need health insurance coverage, they are eligible for our health care buyout program in which the employee will receive a lump sum added to their bi-weekly pay of 30% of what the town is saving.

Dental: 100% paid for by the town.  Life Insurance: Exempt employees receive life insurance equal to their base salary, not to exceed fifty thousand dollars. 

Long-Term Disability: All Department Heads are eligible for long-term disability paid for by the town.  Pension: All full-time employees will be enrolled in the New Hampshire Retirement System. Annual Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year

Sick Leave Program: Employees accrue 12 hours of sick time per month.

Vacation: Negotiable. Personal Days: Employees are entitled to 3 personal days per year. Employee Assistance Program
