Question 1: How do I renew my Food License?

Please visit our Food Licensing page and complete the renewal application form to renew your food license. You’ll need to submit updated business information, pay the annual licensing fee, and ensure your establishment complies with local and state food safety regulations. Renewal reminders are typically sent out via USPS 30-60 days before expiration.

Question 2: How do I register my food truck in Exeter?

Food truck operators must complete a Mobile Food Service Application and provide a copy of a valid commissary agreement, vehicle inspection, and proof of ServSafe certification. Once reviewed and approved by the Exeter Health Department, you will receive a permit to operate within the town. Temporary permits may also be required for events.

Question 3: What is the Town of Exeter's Homestead Policies?

The Town of Exeter follows New Hampshire State guidance on homestead food operations, which allows limited food production from private residences under certain conditions. Homestead operators must register with the state, label all products properly, and follow guidelines regarding approved food items. Contact the Health Department for a review of your products and potential licensing requirements.

Question 4: Are Service Animals allowed in food establishments?

Yes, service animals are permitted in food establishments under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, emotional support animals, therapy animals, or pets are not classified as service animals and are not allowed in food preparation or dining areas. Owners may not be asked to show documentation but can be asked if the animal is required for a disability and what task it performs.

Question 5: How do I submit a formal health complaint?

To submit a health-related complaint, please fill out the Health Complaint Form located on the Public Health and Safety page, or contact the Exeter Health Department directly by phone or email. All complaints are confidential and reviewed by a health inspector who will follow up as needed.

Question 6: I am a new restaurant owner in Exeter. How do I proceed?

Welcome! New restaurant owners must submit a Plan Review Application before construction or remodeling, followed by a Food Establishment License Application. You'll need to include your proposed menu, equipment list, floor plan, and meet with a health inspector for a pre-operational inspection. Contact our office early in the planning process so we can support your success from the start.

Question 7: How do I test my PRIVATE well for contaminants in my water system?

Private well owners are responsible for their water quality. You should test your water every three years for bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, PFAS/PFOS, and other common contaminants. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) offers testing resources and certified labs. Sample bottles and instructions are available at the Health Department upon request. A lab fee is associated with each test—please visit the Public Health and Safety page for more information.

Question 8: How often should I pump my septic tank? What is the lifespan of the system? And what are the signs of a failing septic system?

Septic tanks should generally be pumped every 3–5 years, depending on household size and usage. A well-maintained system can last 20–30 years. Warning signs of failure include slow drains, gurgling toilets, sewage odors, or standing water in your yard. Regular maintenance and inspections can prevent costly system failures and protect public health.
