Prevent Frozen Pipes

With extremely cold temperatures approaching, the Public Works Department would like to remind residents to take a few simple steps to protect their homes and plumbing.

To help prevent frozen pipes:

  • Maintain water flow - Allow a small, steady drip from faucets, especially those on exterior walls
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes
  • Keep thermostats set consistently, even overnight or when away
  • Seal drafts near pipes located in basements, crawl spaces, or exterior walls
  • Disconnect outdoor hoses and ensure interior shut-off valves are closed
  • No water or suspect frozen pipes?

During business hours Mon-Fri 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM), contact Public Works at (603) 773-6157 to see if there is a widespread water service interruption; if not, you would then need to contact a plumber.

After hours, weekends, or holidays, please call Non-Emergency Dispatch at (603) 772-1212.Taking these precautions now can help prevent damage, costly repairs, and service disruptions. Stay warm and safe!

Help Public Works Before the Storm

To help Public Works’ Crews efficiently and effectively remove snow from Exeter’s roadways and sidewalks, residents are asked to assist with:

  • Clearing sidewalks of debris, trash cans, recycling bins, planters, and other decorative items prior to a storm
  • Ensure parked cars are not blocking sidewalks
  • Keep excess snow from your property off of public streets and sidewalks
  • Reduce speed, turn on headlights, and maintain a safe distance from plow drivers
  • Adopt a fire hydrant: If you have a fire hydrant near your home, consider helping emergency services by keeping access to hydrants clear of snow

How Does Public Works Handle Snow Storms?

Public Works Crews work around the clock to keep Exeter’s 72 miles of roadways and 35 miles of sidewalks safe and free of snow during a large weather event. Last winter, Exeter TV tagged along during the night shift to see how Public Works staff work to keep roads and sidewalks open and passable. Watch the video on Exeter TV's YouTube page.
