Project Overview
2014: The Gilman Park foot bridge has experienced significant deterioration over time. The bridge deck has rotted, and the supporting structure requires substantial repairs to ensure the bridge can be safely used by the public.
Due to current budget limitations, full replacement of the bridge is not feasible at this time. To evaluate potential repair options, the Town engaged a structural engineer to assess the bridge and determine whether rehabilitation work could safely extend its service life.
Public Works crews expect to begin repairs within the coming weeks. The project is anticipated to proceed in several phases:
- Installation of steel reinforcing plates to strengthen the existing frame.
- Removal and lifting of the bridge deck using a specialized crane. Due to overhead high-voltage power lines, access is only possible from the Gilman Park side.
- Installation of new support timbers beneath the bridge.
- Replacement of the bridge decking and repairs to the handrails.
This is a challenging project that must be completed with limited available funding. While the Town is optimistic that these repairs will successfully extend the life of the bridge for several years, the extent of existing deterioration may present unforeseen challenges as work progresses.
We appreciate the public's patience and understanding while these improvements are completed.
