Washington Street Water Main Replacement Project

Washington Street Water Main Replacement Project

Updates:

5/2/19: Paving was completed yesterday and the contractor will be back to clean up over the next week or so.

4/26/19: Due to the rain today, we will be pushing the start date of paving to Monday.  The service trenches that cross the street will also be replaced. Driveways will be temporarily inaccessible for brief periods while the work is being done, primarily on the west side of the street (even numbers). The work is expected to take about 4 days in total.

4/24/19: The schedule for the Washington Street paving has changed. The contractor will begin work on Friday, April 26 and continue through Wednesday, May 1st.  (No work will be done on Saturday or Sunday.) This work will extend into Front Street and Brentwood Road. Please use caution and allow for extra travel time.

4/22/2019: The temporary pavement that was installed last year will be removed and replaced with permanent pavement next week, April 30-May 2. The service trenches that cross the street will also be replaced. Driveways on the west side of the street (even numbers) will be temporarily inaccessible for brief periods while the work is being done.

6/20/2018: All of the utility work was completed last week. Final paving will occur later this year. We will notify residents prior to paving.

Project Information:

The purpose of this project is to replace the 6-inch water main on Washington Street from Front Street to Brentwood Road. The existing water main consists of approximately 1,800 feet of asbestos cement (AC) pipe and cast iron (CI) pipe, some of which was installed as early as 1886.  The water main has a history of 20 breaks within the last 16 years, and more than 11 of those have been in the last 7 years, including 2 in 2017.

The engineering design was approved in March 2017 for the water main and investigations into other utilities for $68,000. The storm and sanitary sewer investigations determined that the existing storm and sanitary sewers are adequate.  The water main design was completed by Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc (W&S).  The town voted on March 13, 2018, to approve funding for construction, construction administration, and inspection in the amount of $665,000. On March 19, 2018, the Select Board approved awarding the construction contract to N. Granese & Sons, Inc. (Salem, MA) in the amount of $446,108.90.

A public meeting was held on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Office to inform residents about the scope and schedule of the project. If you were unable to attend the meeting, you can watch it on Comcast Channel 22 or online.

Construction will begin on May 7, 2018. Granese will start with setting up traffic controls and signs, then construct the temporary water system for the rest of the week. Traffic will alternate one way through the work zone.

The week of May 14th, staff from Granese will be going door to door to connect all of the homes on Washington St to the temporary water system.
